Capstone ideas

I have semi-decided on an idea for my capstone and have begun the script for it. I don’t have much in said script, so I am open to new ideas for a capstone. I’ve had 2-3 other ideas that I thought were cool, but for one reason or another I gave up on.

1. A movie streaming website that one could watch movies with a limited number of friends online, all whilst chatting about the movie in a chatroom. I’ve always been interested in the idea of watching movies with people online. I had a small side project for a while that involved streaming movies that I liked online. Now the obvious issue was the legality of streaming copyrighted content online. so that’s where that died

The thing that inspired me were channels on webcam sites like justintv and livestream that did the same thing, before they were banned for violating the sites terms of service.

2. My current idea is one that I have been bouncing around my mind for a while. A short scifi narrative about time travel. I’ve begun the script and I have the base idea, but I lack a story line and ending. Even the beginning is sketchy at this point. I have to just buckle down and flush it out in to something workable. This one seems like the most demanding.

The things that inspired this are my fave movie Primer and FAQ About Time Travel, along with my other time travel obsession movies.

3. My final Idea was for a time management site. One that would show a simple timeline that one could enter in dates and events in to that would update in real time. I’m not sure how much different this would be from something like google calendar other than instead of a calendar, it would be a literal time line on screen. dunno about this one.

Inspired by Pink Floyd’s song Time.

I really like all of your ideas — your first and last mainly. The first one, you’re absolutely right, you would have to find a way around the legality of streaming copywrited videos. But that is still a seriously cool idea if you could comb it out.

I also like the time management site, though I think this would work better as an app for a smart phone or a tablet. But then I think of the Calendar app…or Google like ya said. Not to mention there’s Doodle.com which I think is actually pretty close to what you’re thinking here.

I think that the second idea about the time travel movie is the most feasible. However, how can you make it different from what Back to the Future, Bill and Ted, The Time Machine(1960), or your favorite time travel movies? See if you can watch those movies and see what you can do differently.

Well my basic premise is not so much time TRAVEL so much as cross-chronological interaction with one self (the character). Basically the protagonist accedenly creates a wormhole in which he can send items in to the past or future, depending on which end he puts items in. The amount of time backwards or forwards would only be an hour and only as far as the machine has existed/been on. The only movies I know of that have a similar premise to mine are Lake House and Frequency; both of which have timeline gaps of years, not hours. I guess my main issue is story line. How would you interact with a one hour future and past version of yourself? All I have right now is basic gimmicks and no real script.

I like your last idea. The one about the timeline. Perhaps for it to be more different from Google calender, you could add the option of adding links, files, or videos specifically for that point on the timeline. Just a thought that sparked. πŸ˜€

Out of all your ideas, I think your third one sounds most interesting and could be pretty marketable. I know I’m really about my time management and if I had something that was keeping me on track that would be nice. But sometimes I like the idea of a reward. I think you were to do this and have it geared towards college kids that would be kind of neat. Like it could be a new “social network” like foursquare in the sense that if you complete a task you get points. And if you don’t complete tasks you lose points. And you compete with you friends. Just an idea.

There are many different perspectives on time travel you could use:
    1. Distant future or past (Back to the Future)
    2. Alternate realities due to changes in the timeline set in the present day. (Butterfly Effect, Timecop)
    3. Repeating events (Groundhog Day, Source Code)
    4. The traveler who is unknown to the characters because he has adapted to the time either by practice or unique skills) (Highlander)
    5. The main character is an alien (Dr. Who)
    6. A character is displaced from his/her time to the present (Kate and Leopold)

Many of these options can be shot in the modern day with the plot describing the time travel and/or character uniqueness.

I say make that time travel movie. You have time to flesh out your script, and you could do some neat things visually with green screen. Maybe the character would interact with him/herself at some point? I like creative movie ideas like this, as there seems to always be a plethora of documentaries being made in our major. William Wallace,
The idea for chatting online while watching a movie would be good for those who would like to critique a movie.

i love the idea of a website where you can watch streaming movies with other people and chat with them being somone that loves watching movies i think that this would add a whole new experience to watching movies. watching movies by your self is all good but i think it heightens the experience when you can watch a move with others and discuss what is going on.

I personally like the idea of streaming videos for others to watch together online. What if the list of films were original films like student peices and students paid a fee to post their video and users registered to use the sight.

I love the support behind my streaming videos, but until I get the legality of it ironed out, I think that idea is out of the question. Maybe when I have enough funds for a good legal team πŸ˜€

I love the first idea!!! I am always “that person” that wants to talk about what’s happening during the movie. Usually my friends/family watching with me will discuss it with me but sometimes I’ll get a quick “SHH” haha! Will the user pre-determine who they will be talking with or can you ‘find’ people also watching a specific movie to talk to? If I can’t talk with my girlfriends I wouldn’t mind chatting with strangers about the movie! Might need to do a survey to see if anyone else likes to chat with strangers…might just be me… πŸ™‚

I think for the purposes of the capstone, you could manage to do the video streaming site by using public domain video. I mean, it’s not as cool as having real movies on there, but the idea is cooler than the content.

I really like your idea for a social video streaming service. I’ve had the same curiosity. It would be great if it were a set top box or app for one and had a wireless keyboard. Maybe just have a duplex sound conference so you could talk?

I like th esecond idea in that it would be interesting to make. It reminds me of the movie where the guy is on an old radio and he is able to talk to his deceased father 20 years in the past. Unfortunantly I can’t think of the name of the movie. It would be cool to do. The first idea also sounds really good, the issue with that would be trying to figure out how to make the website in that you can stream stuff to other people on a chat. It would be like netflix and facebook chat had an iligitimate child that everyone loved but them because he was messing up copyrights lol.
